Vinyl Rip Roll-Off Is Not a Transcode
A needledrop often dies above 16–18 kHz because vinyl and the chain roll off. That slope is not an MP3 wall. Check shape on Mac, not only cutoff.

Quick Answer: A genuine vinyl rip or needledrop often shows little energy above 16–18 kHz. That is the medium, the stylus, the RIAA stage, and the pressing. It is not automatically fake lossless. A transcode is a hard brickwall (a floor of silence in a tight band). Vinyl is a slope. Spectro may return MEDIUM or even FAKE on a real needledrop. Read the spectrogram before you delete the rip. Do not “fix” vinyl by converting it to another FLAC.
The screenshot above is the transcode pattern, not a vinyl capture: a .flac with a ruler-straight wall at 12.9 kHz, empty air above it, and a remux encoder tag. A needledrop should not look like this. If it does, someone lossy-encoded the capture, or you downloaded a YouTube vinyl video re-wrapped as FLAC.
Spectro cannot tell “this was a record.” It can tell brickwall vs taper. You still need provenance: you captured it, or you trust the person who did.
Is a vinyl rip fake lossless if it dies at 16 kHz?
Usually no, if the top is a roll-off. Vinyl does not carry a flat 22 kHz ceiling like a CD. Capsule response, inner-groove loss, a dull pressing, and a cheap phono preamp all thin the top. A lossless WAV or FLAC of that capture is still lossless relative to the analog playback. The missing air was never in the groove the way it is on a digital master.
Yes, if the top is a brickwall. Then the file spent time as MP3, AAC, or a YouTube stream. Wrapping that in FLAC does not restore the groove. See What Is Fake Lossless Audio?.
A 32 kHz capture is a different false positive: Nyquist sits at 16 kHz by physics. Check sample rate in Get Info before you trust a FAKE chip. That case lives in Fake FLAC False Positives.
Why does Spectro flag some needledrops as MEDIUM or FAKE?
Because cutoff detection is built to catch MP3 walls in DJ FLACs. A quiet, dark vinyl transfer can look empty above 16 kHz. Verdict Engine v1.5 uses multi-segment analysis and an adaptive threshold to reduce false FAKE on sparse acoustic material, but it will not invent cymbal air that the cartridge never saw.
Treat the chip as a triage label:
- LOSSLESS — energy toward Nyquist, or a slope that still reads as a real master. Keep.
- MEDIUM — gray zone. Open the spectrogram. Slope vs wall. Common for vinyl, 320 kbps MP3, and dark masters.
- FAKE — usually a wall. If you know this is your own needledrop and the plot is a slope, mark trusted and keep it. If the plot is a floor at 16.0 kHz with a ruler-straight edge, it is not “warm vinyl.” It is a transcode.
Do not use AccurateRip on a needledrop. There is no CD TOC. A 100 log does not prove lossless on CDs either; on vinyl it does not apply.
What about YouTube needledrops saved as FLAC?
Those are lossy. YouTube delivers AAC or Opus. A converter that writes FLAC stores that lossy decode. The brickwall stays. File size goes up. That is the same rule as You Converted YouTube to FLAC. It Is Still Lossy. A video titled “vinyl rip” does not make the download a needledrop.
This article is not a capture recipe. Spectro does not record analog. It checks the file you already have.
How do you check a vinyl folder on a Mac?
- Keep your own captures in one folder. Do not mix them with WEB FLACs you have not identified.
- Drag the folder into Spectro. Offline. No upload.
- Filter FAKE first. Open those spectrograms. Wall → replace or quarantine. Slope + your provenance → keep, optional Trusted.
- Then MEDIUM. Same visual test. Many honest needledrops land here.
- Finder tags if you want the quarantine visible before Music.app or a NAS library.
Spectro supports FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC, MP3, and AAC. 100-track free trial. For the general false-positive list (32 kHz, old tape, mastering high-cut), stay on Fake FLAC False Positives. For CD rips and logs, use the AccurateRip article above.
FAQ
Is a vinyl rip fake lossless?
Not because it lacks 22 kHz. Only if a lossy encoder sat in the chain. Judge brickwall vs slope.
Why is there no energy above 18 kHz on my needledrop?
Cartridge, pressing, inner grooves, RIAA, and a dark master. That can be a real lossless capture of a limited analog source.
Can I trust Spectro FAKE on a record I digitized myself?
Open the spectrogram. A slope plus your capture chain is a false positive risk. A hard wall means the file you stored is not the analog feed.
Does converting a YouTube vinyl video to FLAC restore the record?
No. YouTube already discarded highs. FLAC only wraps the lossy PCM.
How do I batch-check needledrops on a Mac?
Drag the folder into Spectro. Read FAKE and MEDIUM, then the plot. Analysis stays on-device. 100 tracks free, then a one-time license.
Vinyl is a slope. A transcode is a wall. Drag the folder in and look once. Lossless audio checker. 100-track free trial. CD rips with logs belong in the AccurateRip vs spectrum check, not here.
